You want your swimming pool water to be clean and clear; otherwise, you won’t want to swim in it. Since your filter and pump can only do so much, chemicals are some of the most important pool products you can buy. If you aren’t sure which of these pool products you need, there are a few general types that you should always have on hand:
- Sanitizers—These are the chemicals you need to keep your pool’s water disinfected and sanitized. There should always be a consistent level of chlorine in your water, and you can do this with TriChlor, Bromine, DiChlor, or Calcium Hypochlorite.
- Oxidizers—These chemicals are a secondary sanitizer that should be used every few weeks to get rid of bacteria and algae in your pool. Generally speaking, oxidizers come in a powder form, so all you have to do is dump them directly in your pool water.
- Water balancers—A few times a week, you should test your water’s pH and chlorine levels and adjust as needed to keep your water in balance. Typically, you should plan on testing your pool’s alkalinity every few weeks and your calcium hardness and cyanuric acid levels on a monthly basis.
